Hey Bill,
Yeah, the wiki image is intentionally vague. When I first posted you could click on the image and read the content however I realized after I posted that I don't have permission from the client to publish that content so I decided to immediate yank the larger image. As for SHFB, that could have a larger image and if I get the chance I'll update it.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the comment. Delphi's comment format isn't compatible with SandCastle. I work with Adam Markowitz who originally implemented the doc style commenting and there were some issues which lead to the incompatibility. Regardless, it's a very nice feature to have.

Thanks for the link to SandCastleGui I'll have to check that out.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

I've used SandCastle to document an API that I did for an in-house project to provide our .NET developers access to some Win32 Delphi data structures. I tried to use the SandCastle binaries directly, but quickly gave up and quickly grabbed SandCastleGui. I want to look at SHFB and see if it has anything over SandCastleGui.

It would be great if SandCastle would work on Win 32 Delphi projects, but not I'm not holding my breath waiting for that to happen. But it is a great tool for generating .NET documentation.

Posted by: Chris Miller

Hi there Steve,
Thank you for the tips so far. How can I get D2006 to work directly from a drive other than
C: without referencing he current user at all. All my development is done on Drive D and there
are no references to c drive at all under D7.
Your help is appreciated and YES please give me back the old palette.....

Steve,
What can I say? It's been my privilege to see this syndrome before, with another company whose customers were very faithful, though not for as long. The company was raped and pillaged, repeatedly, and yet it survived.

And in the very good news column, I just accepted a job with a very good company, and will be working in.... wait for it.... Delphi. They want to transition to C#, but I have discussed with the dept. head the gentler path of retargeting the Delphi to .NET, fixing the breakage, then working in C# for new modules. Along the way, and with the new deal, he may even decide it's not imperative to switch. The difficulty of finding Delphi developers remains an issue, though.

So again, I hope the new owners will support aggressive marketing, as well as development.

Posted by: Bill Meyer

Hey Bill,
Thanks for the comment. I don't read the Borland/CodeGear newsgroups these days but I'm surprised to hear it's negative given Borland's steep decline over the past 10 months. I don't claim to know anything about Embarcadero but I hope for the sake of my friends at CodeGear this is a good move in a positive direction.

Like you, I wish them nothing but the best as they've been through a lot.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

Craig,
Yes, there is a way to target email at source control userids. For more details refer to this page of the CCNET docs. Specifically, look at how Converters work where you can convert a sourcecontrol userid to an email address. I'm fairly certain that the support for this feature was introduced after the 1.3 release so you'll likely want to grab a later build or grab the tip and rebuild CCNET.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

Is there a way to set up cruise control to have emails go out to those uerss who have committed a files for a build that fails? I've read how you can set up users and not assign them to a group, which intern emails them whether the build fails or passes. I want the same kind of functionality, but only when the build fails. I dont want to have them get emailed if the build passes.

Posted by: Craig

Hi Sergey,
If you check the last note at the bottom of this post you can see that I updated the Starter Kit to VS.NET 2008. If you're using 2005 you'll see this error. You can still get at the files by renaming the .vsi file to .zip and extracting the contents. If I get a chance I'll look at posting a VS.NET 2005 version but I can't say I'll get to that soon.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

I just downloaded vsi but when I am trying to run it I get this error:
“One or more content items contained within the .vscontent file cannot be installed because the correct version of the content installer component cannot be found.

Any help would be appreciated.

Having not even used it but only watched the little Mesh videos I come away with Mesh being FolderShare for the consumer masses that actually has an API and supports a greater interaction story between users.

I love FolderShare but it has some serious limitations, such as no API, no ability to use it with a mobile device, no way to communicate inside your public folders and lacking a fully consumer-friendly UI, all of which Mesh seems to be attempting to fill. I've run up against all these issues lately in FolderShare and can definitly see the need for something like Mesh. Being able to add notes to files you've dropped in a public space would be super helpful for a project I'm working on and I know my wife would kill for a solid way to access files on her laptop from her mobile in a unified way. Also after helping a friend setup FolderShare I can see that it still needs some work for the less techy which again is where Mesh steps in.

Now, being a developer the real gold would be the API. I'm itching to see just how much you can do with the API and just who will take advantage of it. My pie-in-the-sky hope is that Microsoft will plug the XBox\Zune Marketplace into Mesh so any content purchased via either one gets syncronized with the other, which is a huge missing feature right now. Another hope would be services like Amazon's MP3 & movie download service offering a plug-in for Mesh so items go directly into your Mesh cloud vs. a direct to PC download, thus making it easier to make sure you always have access to your media.

In a way Mesh seems to want to bring a lot of the stories we're used to as business users; network drives, shared storage, VPN, remote desktop, Exchange contact syncing, to the consumer masses in a cleaner, unified way, even more accessable way. Much like how WHS brings the server into the home, a lot of business or power users sorta go 'meh' but I think WHS is one of the most important bits of tech kit to come out last year and anyone with more than two computers in househould should buy one, now.

I think you can also attribute this to Microsoft trying to add a little Apple-esque RDF hype to Mesh, remember how people wet themselves over silly things like OS X Spaces or Time Capsule? Completely minor features yet they were launched like they were The Missing Feature to make the best OS of all time. Problem is most Microsoft followers don't drink the koolaid as deeply as the average Jobionan so most of us are like, "Whhaaa?"

Posted by: Shawn Oster

Just a note to let you guys know that this problem is not limited to Macs running Vista. I have three PC desktops that freeze or black screeen when coming out of sleep. This is a problem for many windows users. There is evidence that this 'may' be caused with nVidia video card drivers. I know that all my machines use nVidia cards, and so do the newer MacBooks.

Posted by: John

Hi Steve,
I keep UAC enabled, it doesn't bother me at all, but if you really don't want the UAC prompt to show up at least use the "silent mode" and don't just disable UAC.
Here is an interesting reading by a unix security guy that recently joined Microsoft, so his brain can not be considered washed yet! ;-)

Just my humble opinion.

I think Borland/CodeGear is suffocating the language and putting themselves out of business by not offering an **affordable** (not necessarily "free") option for people who love Delphi and want to learn, grow or sharpen their skills in it. The latest Delphi is nearly $400 for just the upgrade, and to purchase the full-up version you're out nearly $1K! That's almost double the price of a new computer! My wife would never let me spend a grand on a compiler! Get real!! They do have a Turbo Delphi "Explorer" line, which I thought was their equivalent to the old "Turbo Pascal" product line. Not true. This edition is so stripped down and padlocked that you can't even write or install components in it!

I only wish CodeGear would learn a lesson from Sun Microsystems. They offer a full-featured, robust development system (NetBeans), free of charge, that has everything you can do in Java. The result? A world full of people who can download and learn it for free, and become skilled Java developers. When companies want to pick a software system, they're going to go where the skilled developers are. Consequently, they're going to go to Sun for their hardware and software needs. Or, if they *must* spend the kind of money CodeGear is asking for, they'll just go with Microsoft and use VisualStudio for its name and popularity. Borland Pascal and Delphi became popular when people could buy a full-featured product for $50 - $150, a price home users are willing and able to pay, and then take their skills to the marketplace.

It's interesting to note that when Delphi priced us "ordinary Joes" out of the market, Delphi jobs on Monster.com and Dice.com dropped from 11% to 0.8% of the market share. In the same time frame, Java maintained a solid 35% of the market share on job sites. Interesting!

Posted by: Delphi_Programmer1234

Hey Shawn,
Thanks for the comment. Ok, so perhaps "laughing stock" might have been a bit overboard but I heard plenty of times "why don't you just turn that f*ing think off??" then it would move onto comments like I was a masochist etc.

Anyway, it's good to hear your position. There's no doubt I wanted/tried to keep it on since, at least conceptually, it makes sense. But alas, it finally annoyed me enough to the point where I just gave up on it. A "few times a week" is too much if you ask me particularly if I'm going to be on the system for 5-6 years as with XP. Perhaps now my machine has settled down in terms of installing new software it's time to revisit turning it back on. When you're setting up a machine from scratch UAC it's a horrible experience.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

I've been running Vista pretty solid on three different development machines for almost a year and I don't think I've ever been tempted to turn off UAC, except once trying to do some URL rewriting with an older module inside IIS7 with VS 2005. Usually after the initial flury of application installs I'm not prompted by UAC more than a few times a week.

I've found keeping UAC turned on helps ensure I'm getting the same experience most of my clients are which makes trouble shooting easier. Also it helps keep me honest since one of the reasons we are even in this UAC mess is because most Windows developers abused the system, ignored security guidelines and basically made the horrible assumption that everyone would always run with Admin priviliages.

Running UAC made you the laughing stock at CodeGear? That's just sad... though it explains a few things about the quality of certain experiences I've had using Delphi lately.

In a weird way I also use UAC to weed out poorly written programs. There has been more than enough time for devs to update their applications yet I still see a few that suggest disabling UAC to install or always running the application elevated, at which point the entire program goes in the trash heap.

Speaking of Live Mesh though... any invites left by any chance? :)

I am sitting in a Essential SilverLight 2 training course right now (www.develop.com). Course is really good and the trainers are doing a great job. I was doing some Internet searching for what are the real differences between Design and Blend, and why? ('cause we had already mentioned the export from Design, and we have focused attention on VS.NET 2008 and Blend).

Seems to me Microsoft would be better to merge Design and Blend, and really get behind this XAML stuff.... in my opinion... XAML has too much WPF concepts and not enough HTML/DHTML/CSS or even ASP.NET Controls, at least for the concepts and the behavior of the user interface mark up language. This is all interesting, but it is very difficult to get my mind around.... coming from a deep rooted Internet background, lots of HTML/DHTML/CSS, and ASP.NET Controls.

Posted by: Pete Gordon

Hi Thorsten & Tim,
Thanks for the comments. Fwiw, I tried for the first 4 months after installing Vista to run as Power User with UAC on and it nearly made me the laughing stock with the guys at CodeGear. I figured I wanted my experience to mirror that of the customer. Oh wel...

Eventually, I switched to using VS.NET full time and started debugging ASP.NET on IIS I gave up not running as admin and on using UAC.

Posted by: Steve Trefethen

Hey Steve,

I didn't know about quser.exe and logoff, is that from Server 2003 Admin Tools pack? What I like about qwinsta and rwinsta is that it comes with Windows XP and when I'm helping my QA department, they can get out of jam without installing anything. It looks like you get more information from quser than from qwinsta, specially the idle time.

Posted by: Chris Miller

"I’d be hard pressed to think of someone I know running Vista who hasn’t disabled UAC."

I've just installed a new system with Windows 2008 ( configured as a desktop system, see http://www.win2008workstation.com/ ) and I decided to go with a normal limited user account. Beyond the first time the system booted I've never logged in to the Administrator desktop. And I have to say that I found the experience of setting up and using the system from a normal user account to be pretty smooth overall.

As for trying out Mesh:
